Walker, an African-American painter, often tackles issues like race, gender, violence and identity. Much of her work deals specifically with African diaspora as well as reminding of the horrors and grim realities that characterized the 19th American South. She often draws on famous characters from American literature and folklore to reveal subtle racism and stereotypes.
Walker’s work has been exhibited in museums like The Renaissance Museum in Chicago, New York’s Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Minneapolis’ Walker Art Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago.
Famous works include ‘Motherland‘ and the large-scale exhibit For the Benefit of All Mankind (Mos’ Specially the Master One, Boss).
In 2007, she was included in Time Magazine’s list of the world’s 100 most influential artists and entertainers. She is currently a faculty member of Columbia University’s MFA program.
